Our adventure starts in the United States where the camper-van appeared for the first time in 1919. First in the shape of small stainless steel caravans (called tin car tourists), the camper-van rapidly became a renowned feature of the American way of life. From the beaches of California to the wide-open spaces, the Volkswagen Westfalia, designed in the 1950s, became representative of holidays and camping in the wild. Adorned in flashy colours, it would also become the symbol of hippie counter-culture and Flower Power.
By deciphering the folklore of the camper-van, which was synonymous with mobility, nature, and freedom, this film develops a much broader story, that of the 1970s and 1980s.
